With PaaS (Platform as a Service) or IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) estimating the spend can be somewhat challenging due to DTUs (Database Transaction Unit), compute hours, licensing vs. Service based options, etc. You may want this information up front and in your face as you setup and tweak your environment.
Monitoring the burn rate will prevent unanticipated charges due to usage and/or environmental changes as well as preventing your resources from being taken off-line due spending limits. The new Azure Portal is extremely customizable providing the capabilities to control the layout of your dashboard. The portal provides easy access to this important data for each of your your subscriptions.
First access your subscriptions from the left menu:
This will take you to the list of all your subscriptions, from there click the context menu for each subscription and select Pin to dashboard
Now your dashboard will conveniently display your current spend including the total days remaining in the current billing cycle per subscription.
Further details can be viewed by clicking the subscription summary from the dashboard. This includes the breakdown of cost components as well as burn rate projections.
